Requirements

Use Chrome 149 or newer on Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, Linux, or a Chromebook Plus. Chrome currently documents at least 22 GB of free space on the profile volume and either more than 4 GB of GPU memory or at least 16 GB of system memory with four CPU cores. The initial model download requires an unmetered connection.

Chrome may disable its built-in model on unsupported hardware, enterprise-managed browsers, low-storage devices, or profiles that are not allowed to download it. Research Assistant Pro shows a compatibility message instead of using a cloud fallback.

Get started

  1. Open a regular web article or a directly linked text-based PDF.
  2. Click Research Assistant Pro in Chrome's toolbar.
  3. Choose the summary length and output language.
  4. Click Summarize this page and keep the panel open if Chrome needs to download its model.
  5. Review the overview and key points, ask contextual questions, and verify important information against the source.
  6. Copy the brief or download it as Markdown when needed.

Supported sources and limits

  • Readable web pages opened over HTTP or HTTPS.
  • Directly opened, text-based PDFs up to 30 MB and 300 pages.
  • Local PDFs when Chrome's Allow access to file URLsoption is enabled.
  • Sources are capped at 160,000 characters; the panel discloses when a source was shortened.

Scanned, image-only, and password-protected PDFs are not supported in version 0.1.0. Chrome-protected pages such as browser settings cannot be read by extensions.

If the AI model is unavailable

  1. Update Chrome and restart the browser.
  2. Confirm the device and free-storage requirements above.
  3. Use an unmetered connection for the first model download.
  4. On a managed device, ask the browser administrator whether Chrome's on-device generative AI model is disabled by policy.

Local data and deletion

Source text, briefs, and questions are not saved by the extension and disappear when the panel is closed or reloaded. Summary length and output language remain in Chrome's local extension storage. Removing the extension or clearing its stored data deletes those preferences.
